Andrew Nacht

MOMMA AND ME

She is standing on a life raft the size of a cracker out in the ocean
waving her arms wildly to get the attention of the ship lumbering by.
He looks down from the top deck of the ship and sees her in frantic motion,
she reminds him of an injured bird that can’t get airborne no matter how hard it tries
suddenly, he feels a jolt, the ship is sinking-
less weight, less weight, he intuitively thinks,
out go the teddybears, the lollypops,
the bed, the heavenly home-base cuddle-nest bed is thrown overboard,
as is the mall, the whole mall
he punches a hole in the beloved restaurant, the home of so many lunch dates
within the mall, before the whole thing is thrown overboard,
now for the hugs, kisses, and all that advice….wait,
the ship is not capsizing anymore, balance has been restored!
He sits down on deck, dripping with sweat and breathes a sigh of relief,
thank God not everything had to go, he says to himself.
